There are two rarely acknowledged benefits of an economic downturn; it’s a wakeup call to cut production costs and it gives you more time to think about how you’re going to do that cutting. Just a year ago, cutting production costs was the first item on the agenda – now it’s the only item on the agenda. And the old adage of being too busy to try something new can no longer be used as an excuse because a slowdown, no matter how modest, gives you the ideal opportunity to implement improvements so that you’ll be ready for the inevitable upturn.

Saldanha Steel boosts its yield
CSense fast-tracks process improvement in the Rolling Plant.
Saldanha Steel, part of the ArcelorMittal group, produces steel for niche markets with specific quality requirements. The plant has an annual output of about 1.2 Mt.
The company has embarked on a Six Sigma continuous improvement drive that included, among other things, the implementation of CSense. The application helps eliminate production problems by analysing plant data in real time and determining the probable causes at the Iron making plant.

CSense Cause+ is specifically geared towards supporting the production or manufacturing engineer or process specialist in generating real-time causes for process deviations and giving the operator appropriate actionable messages at the same time. In this way, in-depth process knowledge can be made available to operators in real-time to specifically guide them during problematic times when deviations occur in KPIs such as throughput, yield, quality, and product grade.
